With approximately 19,000 full-time and 29,000 total students and more than 1,400 instructors, it is one of the largest higher education institutions in the country. With 15 faculties and 23 doctoral schools, it undoubtedly offers the widest range of training and research.

The University of Debrecen, like other integrated higher education institutions in the country, was established on January 1, 2000 by the (re)unification and legal succession of previously independent institutions.

Its historical roots go back to the founding of the Reformed College of Debrecen (1538), the Royal Hungarian University of Debrecen was founded on the basis of its three academic departments, which were established later.

With this four and a half century, uninterrupted history, the University of Debrecen is today the country´s oldest higher education institution continuously operating in the same city. Agricultural higher education in Debrecen began at the Debrecen National Institute of Higher Economics, established in 1868.
